Basis of Freedom
10/1/2012
First From Julie's Keyboard:
Someone said in a message that I heard this week these words: “Go where the Lord sends you. Stay where the Lord puts you. Give what the Lord has given you.” So simply put, yet so challenging for so many of us. It seems in this day so often we hear of all the many great things folks are doing. Granted, there are some smart folks in this world, yet they would have nothing had God not given the means for the getting.
When we can hear the voice of the Shepherd, and follow not a stranger, we’ll be in sync with the above mentioned quote. How easy it can be to look to the things we call more noble in this life. We want the nice things that come with being in this Land of Freedom, and maybe all too often make this our chief ambition. Jesus simply said to His disciples, “Follow me.” Are we willing to go where He sends us? Are we willing to stay there when He does? Are we willing to take up the basin and the towel of service in this place of giving?
This lesson called me back into a place of focus. Time is passing. The Day is drawing near. Will He find me watching and obeying?….
Have a Blessed Week,
Julie

Basis of Freedom
As
I turn my thoughts this week to our country, the election beginning
full swing, I realize how little hope I have in the political system
to solve our problems. From my perspective our problems are not of a
political nature, but a spiritual one. The politics are only a stem
growing out of the root from which we have grown as a nation. That
root being our spiritual foundation.
Founding Father Noah Webster had a significant impact on America. He was a soldier during the American Revolution and a legislator and a judge afterward; he was also one of the first Founders to call for a Constitutional Convention, and while he didn’t sign it, Webster directly impacted the final wording of the Constitution, He stated: “The Christian religion, in its purity, is the basis, or rather the source of all genuine freedom in government. . . . and I am persuaded that no civil government of a republican form can exist and be durable in which the principles of that religion have not a controlling influence.” ~ Noah Webster. K. Alan Snyder, Defining Noah Webster: Mind and Morals in the Early Republic (New York: University Press of America, 1990), p. 253, to James Madison on October 16, 1829.
According to Mr. Webster, the very basis of our freedom and the very existence of our form of government have no support and cannot long endure without the controlling influence of the Christian religion. At this point in our history we have but almost removed such influence from our society, thus removing the basis and foundational support for all we are and have been over the years.
I see no hope in the politics of this nation to move us back to that spiritual foundation, it simply is not the place of government to do so. As prescribed in our Constitution, the hope only resides in the people and their desire for spiritual things. We can pray for our government and should, but even the best men in government will make little difference in the face of our problems without a people whose heart are set on God.
May God bless each of you,
David
